Getting Your Site Indexed.

The first step on the path to organic visibility is getting your website indexed by search engines, such as Google. Google crawls hundreds of billions of different pages every day, and it is from this that Google helps to create the search engine results page (SERP). Therefore, in order for your webpages to be featured in the SERP, Google must be able to crawl and index your website.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR SITE IS BEING INDEXED?

There are a number of different ways to check whether a site is being indexed. The quickest and simplest way to check if a page is being indexed by Google is to use the site + colon search. After this, you simply add the root URL (without www. or /) and the results will show you every page that Google has indexed under this URL.

This looks as follows:

site:pmachine.com

You can also enter a specific page URL to see if that individual page has been indexed.

WHAT IF GOOGLE ISN’T INDEXING YOUR SITE?

If your website isn’t being indexed, the most common culprit is the robots.txt being used on a page. In some instances, it may be due to content duplication, which means Google doesn’t understand which page the preferred and original source is. This can be solved by adding a canonical tag to the link to the original source, or entirely re-writing your website copy or content to make it unique; then ask it to be re-indexed/crawled by Google.

HOW TO ASK GOOGLE TO INDEX YOUR SITE?

The best way to get Google to index your site is by submitting a request to Google to crawl your website’s URLs. The process includes submitting your websites sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools. It is also worth submitting your site in Webmaster Tools, as well as submitting your individual pages and ask for them to be indexed.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE GOOGLE TO INDEX A NEW SITE?

It takes between 4 days and 4 weeks for brand-new and existing websites to be crawled and indexed by the Google search engine. This range is fairly broad because it does vary from website to website, depending on the authority and content.
